As concerns about school safety continue to rise in the United States in the wake of numerous mass shootings, the updated school chaplains training program from the National School Chaplain Association (NSCA) focuses on equipping people with student counseling and conflict resolution skills as part of crisis prevention.
Recent data from the U.S. Secret Service and Department of Education Gun Violence Archive shows that most mass shootings in schools were planned in advance and could have been prevented with early interventions, explains the organization. As therapy services in schools often carry a stigma for students, the role of the school chaplain is less formal and chaplains can help troubled students get mental health assistance in a non-threatening, accessible way. “The number one reason to hire a school chaplain is school safety,” says a NSCA representative. “A chaplain can be the last line of defense, and National School Chaplain Association chaplains are trained to recognize school safety issues and take steps to help create safer learning environments.”
As part of the student counseling portion of the NSCA training program, aspiring chaplains will be trained to support students with anxiety or depression, provide a holistic, non-judgmental approach to healthcare that includes spiritual beliefs, and offer some reprieve for over-burdened teachers and other mental health professionals in a school setting.
Program participants will also learn conflict resolution skills and ways in which to diffuse high-tension situations involving students, as well as techniques to intervene in potentially dangerous situations.
The NSCA Chaplains Certification Course is 8 weeks long and is accredited through Oral Roberts University. It includes basic First Aid training, as well as an Active Shooter and Personality Threat Assessment component.
With rolling admission, the online training program can be started at any time, and NSCA professionals are available to offer support and answer any questions participants may have.
